Blast from the past on 4.25.06

Hi, Everyone :)

Here are the minutes from our meeting tonight in the Undercroft
(oh the memories... :))

Meeting 4.25.06:

Prayer:
Thank you, Jill, for getting us off to a great start!

Reflections from the Weekend:
- Earth Day BBQ was a big success! Definitely check out the
other events listed in the announcements, as they are going to
be great as well!
- Unity Ball and Coffeehouse were a lot of fun! We will look
forward to hearing how much was raised for WRC at each.

Announcements:
- Habitat for Humanity is hosting a Benefit Basketball Game
this Friday to help support their work here at VU. Kirsten is
playing in the game, as are Prof. Whitefield, Prof. Hoffman,
Prof. Zigman, Coach Chip Taylor, and others. It costs $2 at
the door, so please come out if you can! It will be a great
time, and hopefully Kirsten will do SALT proud :)
- Here are the upcoming events for Earth Week:
- Seniors, sign the Green Pledge tomorrow in Mueller or
Friday in Gellersen.
- Thursday night at 8 pm in Neils 234, there will be a
speaker from the Green Party here to speak. It should be very
interesting, so come out to hear it!
- There is an Amnesty International Group forming on campus, as
it has been approved to get started! Look for an upcoming
event led by Kristen Thomas in the next few days!
- Tomorrow is the National Day of Silence for those who are
Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual who do not feel they can talk about
their sexual orientation. Arm bands will be available in the
Union tomorrow to take part in the event, so please take part
in it if you can. It is a very humbling experience.

Immigration:
- Reaction from last week's advocacy:
- Visclosky - It was ok, but he really gave a run around
when asked about the immigration issue so hard to know where he
stands in the end.
- Bayr - We made a great connection, as they would love to
come out to talk to us in the future about the issue. He is
still trying to figure out his official position on the issue,
but this is definitely a connection to develop in the future
months.
- Lugar - Amazing how easy it was to talk with the advisor
and get her to even come out to campus. We got our voices
heard, which is a great start!
- This issue is not going along party lines, which makes it a
great opportunity to get people on both sides to hear about the
different aspects of this controversial bill, without feeling
pressure from their specific party.
- Just an FYI: There is a minuteman group in Valpo called
IFIRE. They are being very diligent in working for this bill
to pass, which is something to watch out for in the coming days.
- Don't be afraid to get your voice heard!! These officials
want to hear from us!
- May 1 - National Boycott Day
- LIVE is hosting a walk from campus to the courthouse at
4 pm
- wear white if you plan to march
- there will be marches around the world on this day, so
this is our opportunity to be a part of a local one

WRC:
- Pizza party this Friday over the lunch hour in Berg, Union,
and the Chapel, and then also at the tennis tournament. Tell
your friends!! Only $1 a slice!
- Please use any extra meal card money you have to buys
balloons from Lank for the 5K.
- Phi Mu Alpha is hosting a coffeehouse for WRC this Saturday
night. Plan on going if you can! This is the second one they
are hosting for us in a semester, which is truly awesome!
- Thanks to all who signed up to help with the 5K run set-up.
If you were not at the meeting and can help in any way, please
contact Tezra Jennings or Greg Stock.
- The day to go to Maria Elena's to support WRC will be May 8,
as May 1 is the National Boycott Day.
- We raised $450 with the professor competition!
- $160 TODAY from the Liturgical Institute :) More to come
tomorrow!!!
- Total as of right now.........drum roll....
$7572 (which does not include ALL money collected yet)
- Please come to Songfest this Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are on
sale now at the Union and all proceeds go to...you guessed
it...WRC!! $2 a ticket
- Encourage people to turn in their 5K forms as soon as
possible so we know that more than 12 people are planning on
coming. Plus, they don't want to miss out on a t-shirt :)
- On Saturday at 8 am, if you want to make your car into a tap
tap bus, bring it on by and have paints to use.
- PLEASE tell Ty by next week if you have gotten any big
donations from businesses or individuals so that he can get a
thank you note to them soon. Also, if you are close to any
organization that has raised money for WRC, please try to get
us the total raised so we have an idea. Thanks!

- Please look for an end-of-the-year survey in an e-mail from
Megan this week! Feel free to fill it out beforehand and bring
it next week or be ready to fill it out at the meeting. We
REALLY value your feedback, as we want to continue to make SALT
an awesome organization, so get excited about a present in your
inbox sooner than later :)

That's all I have...hang in there, everyone, with all the
stress this time of year brings! The finish line is in sight!

See you next week for our last meeting of the year... :(
It will be fun :) 9:30 Gloria Christi Tuesday...you know it :)

So, here's the 4-1-1

Hi, Everyone :)

Here are the minutes from tonight's meeting:

Meeting 4.11.06

One-on-Ones:
- Be sure to keep your dates this week! The weather is getting
warmer, so you could even do something fun outside
potentially...just a thought :)

Announcements:
- Are you ready for som SALT fun?! I thought so...now, we
realize that both of these events are on April 21, but they
will be well worth the effort to make it to both in one night!
Here they are:
1. IVCF is hosting a coffeehouse to support WRC on Friday,
April 21 in the Union.
2. There is a Unity Ball going on at Casa del Roma, hosted
by BSO, AA, LIVE, VISA, and Alliance. It is $7 per person, but
the money raised is going to the WRC. See, you know you want
to come. There will be food, dancing, and downright fun, so
plan on coming with us! We know we are a fun bunch, so let's
show everyone there that this is so!
- There is a March of Dimes walk going on in Valpo on April
30. This is the day after our 5K, but the coordinators could
really use our help, and it is such a great cause. This
organization does so much for premature babies that it would
mean so much if you would be willing to get a group of friends
to do the walk, raise some money to support a walker, or help
with registration and other support staff duties. Katie
Schmidt, a good friend of Kirsten's, is helping to put the
event together, so PLEASE contact her if you can help in any
way. Events start at 9:30 and go through to the early
afternoon, so e-mail Katie at Katie.Schmidt@valpo.edu if you
can help in any way. Thank you SO much in advance!
- This is Holy Week, as most of you know, which is a very busy
time in the chapel. While any help you can give throughout the
week is greatly appreciated, the chapel staff especially asks
that you mark Thursday night on your calendar. After the
Maundy Thursday service, there will be a cleaning party in the
chapel! We need to make the chapel as spotless as possible for
Easter, so come out and help us scrub it down for a few hours.
There will be free Steak and Shake afterwards, so please come
out for that!
- Tomorrow, at Celebrate, there will be footwashing, and Greg
would like to have SALT members do the actual washing if
possible. Please contact him if you can help and could not
talk to him at the meeting.
- There will be a panel discussion on the war in Iraq on
Monday, April 17, in Mueller at 5 pm. Come out to talk about
your stance on the situation right now.
- Earth Week: There will be a BBQ on April 22 from 1:30 to
4:30. Mark this on your calendars, as there will be free food
and great music to enjoy!
- The mugs are a hit in the chapel!! But...there seems to be
some confusion. Please be sure that you rinse out your cup
before putting it in the dirty cup bin. Then all will be
good :)
- Thank you to those who were able to come out and support the
Dallas kids who are looking to go to New Orleans with some of
us this summer. If you are still interested in going on the
trip (it will be from June 26-July 2 and cost about $100) but
could not attend the meetings, please talk to Megan.

Immigration:
- Senators and Representatives for this area are spending
their "Spring Break" here in Indiana. We are close to all
three, and we were hoping to pay them all visits next week to
talk about our stance on the immigration bill. We are looking
to go as a group on Thursday and Friday next week. Come to the
meeting next week to find out final details, or look for an e-
mail from Kat.

WRC:
- We raised $237 at the Operation Game Tournament. Yay! It
was a lot of fun!
- We got $400 from Late Night BINGO...$600 from mailed in
donations...things are going well, as we stand at over $6000
right now. Keep up the good work, and just continue to educate
about Operation Haiti!
- Look for an upcoming dinner date at Marie Elena's, with part
of the proceeds going to WRC :)
- The professors competition will be going on next week, but we
have a lot of spots to fill as of yet. If you have professors
who you would love to see drive a tap tap bus in the Union and
try to get students to come with them, PLEASE e-mail them this
week or talk to them one-on-one about it. Kim will be sending
out a letter you can use to get them the details, so please use
it and see who you can get to jump on board :) They love you,
so get them to help us out for this great cause!
- Registration for the 5K has officially begun! The first 50
people registered will get a t-shirt, so be sure to get
yourself and your friends signed up fast!!! It will be
amazing, so get as many people to come as you can.
- We did get a shirt signed by Guster this past weekend, so
talk to your friends and let them know about it. Once we spark
enough interest, the decision will be made about how they can
win the shirt (raffle, auction, etc.), with the proceeds going
to, where else, but the WRC :)

Closing:
Thank you, Jill, for ending the meeting on such a high note!

HAPPY EASTER, everyone! Have a wonderful and relaxing time
with your family and friends! See you next week, same time,
same place!

Kirsten :)

4/4/06 - Keep on keeping on

Hi, Everyone :)

Here are the minutes from tonight's meeting:

Meeting 4/4/06:

Devotion:
- Thank you to the New Orleans group for sharing their amazing
experience with us! We all have gifts to share, so we should
embrace them and see what joy we can bring to others by using
them.
- We hope to hear from the Costa Rica group next week!

Announcements:
- Church group from Dallas is coming Sunday and Monday to try
and recruit VU students to come with them on their New Orleans
trip this summer. We REALLY encourage you to attend these
meetings and see what they are planning. The meetings are
Sunday at 5 pm in Mueller Refectory and Monday at 4 pm in the
tiered classroom of Mueller.
- The Guster concert is this Sunday! Their tour has an
environmental theme, so be sure to sport your Operation Haiti
shirt if you go!
- Operation Haiti t-shirt day this week will be on Friday.
This way we can advertise all the more for the Operation game
tournament on Saturday.
- Earth Week planning is almost done, so get excited as it gets
closer and ready to attend some great events!
- Relay went very well. We were small but mighty :) Thank you
to everyone who came out, as we helped raise over $41,000 as a
campus.

Immigration Bill Update:
- lirs.org is the place to go to find out more information on
the bill.
- The bill will not be finalized until July or August, so there
is plenty of time to keep getting your voice heard by
congressmen.
- Just an FYI - Mexico, Canada, and the Irish Republic are all
in conversation about this bill and the effect on the
international community, so Mexico is not the only place
affected, despite popular belief.

One-on-Ones:
- We are really seeing positive results from the one-on-ones,
and, as a staff, we are thrilled about it! We will continue to
take into account what we are hearing from these one-on-ones,
in hopes of continuing to make SALT better overall.
- Be sure to keep your dates this week :)

WRC:
- We revisited the case statement to refresh ourselves on why
we are doing all of this work for Jolitrou. We are bringing
hope to an area that really needs better health care, with the
help of ICC.
- The Operation Game tournament is this Saturday from 9-11 pm
in the Community Room. It will be $2 to play and $1 to stay,
so tell all of your friends and come have fun! There will be
mac and cheese, chicken soup, and jello...all things we love
when we are sick, so please get the word out!
- If you have any professor you really think would be a great
addition to the professor competition, please give those names
to Kim Hover or Paula Maust as soon as possible!
- Registration for the 5K should be out this week. It will be
April 29 with registration at 9 and the race starting at 10 in
the morning.
- Cheese tasting put on by the French club will be tomorrow in
the basement of the VUCA. It will be $2, with all proceeds
going to Operation Haiti. If you would like to go, please
contact Liz Brondos TONIGHT so they can be sure to have enough
cheese for everyone.
- Please let Paula or Kim know what you have heard from
businesses by April 18, so we can know how many donations and
prizes have been collected.
- Thank you to Pastor Jim for dancing so well for the WRC!

One last note...tomorrow, there is a faculty exhibit opening in
the Brauer. Aimee Tomasek will have photographs in it from the
New Orleans spring break trip, so check it out if you can!

We missed a lot of you tonight! Hope that your week is going
well, and we will you see next week, same time, same place!

Kirsten :)
