Re: [Salt-l] Only 22 tickets sold!...Buy tickets for dinner on your meal card until 5:00...

Okay,

So, we were told a few different things but it looks like we will be able to take meal card payment at the door as well, so if you know people who would like to pay with a meal card, but aren't going to be able to get a ticket, encourage them to still come!

Peace,
Alissa

[Salt-l] Call for Shaker articles!

Hello SALTers!

As many of you return from spring break trips, or prepare for service over the summer, please consider submitting an article to the Shaker! This issue, the final one of the school year, will focus on serving through mission trips, and how mission trips address specific social justice issues . While all types of articles and topics are welcome, we highly encourage you to write about a spring break trip, a social justice problem in a certain area, opportunities for service in other regions, or some other aspect of mission trips, and also ask for lots of personal quotes - that is, a member of SALT saying what an experience or issue meant to them, in their own words.

All articles should be a half to a full page in length, single-spaced, and should be submitted no later than Tuesday, April 10. Please send all articles to saltshaker.valpo@gmail.com, but also please let Becca Berry or myself know if you are committed to writing an article.
Thank you, and please contact us with any questions!

Blessings,
Laura Ehlen

Re: [Salt-l] Invitation to Dig In: Send to your friends and professors!

I made a typo...use this...not the last one... :)  SALTers, send this message to your friends and professors!  Copy the text below and create a new email, and add your name at the end...DON't forward it, that looks tacky :)

Jambo (Hello),

Please join SALT this Saturday for an evening of food and fun at "Kenya Dig In?".  This educational banquet supports our World Relief Campaign, "Kenya Dig It?: A Well for Wellness".  This year we will be raising $14,000 dollars to dig a well for Lugulu hospital in Kenya.  Attending this dinner is a great way to support the project and learn more about it.  There will be authentic Kenyan food, fair trade crafts for sale and two guest speakers including Professor Raman who teaches Economics of Developing Nations and Mary Mwaura, a Deaconess from Kenya.  It will be held in Ballroom C at 6:00 on Saturday March, 31stTickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance in the dinning services office or at the door. I would really appreciate it if you could attend.

SALTers,

It's time to get down to business!  This week's meeting will start at our normal time, 9:30 in the Lumina Room, with no Pepper.  Our campaign is "well" underway, but there is a lot more digging in pockets to do (if ya' know what I mean!)  So, join us for a productive time, followed by a mystery After-SALT social should we choose to!

[Salt-l] Servant Stories: Come to share, be educated and be changed!

SALTers,

Join us tonight for "Servant Stories" in the Lumina Room at 7:00 to share and hear stories about Spring Break trips.  Whether you went on a trip or not, we'd love to have you there to show your support of SALT'ers, and to hear the stories of people who went on a variety of service trips and music ministry tours.  As we have talked about before, so much of short term service happens upon the return when travelers get to share the stories of the people they met, educating those back home...we are those people!  Hope to see you tonight, there will be desserts and music provided by Sweetwine!

[Salt-l] Friday Party!!

SALTers,

Come by my apartment Friday around 7-10pm to hang out with each other, eat some yummy things, and make some tchotchkes!  The more the merrier, so hope to see you all here.  I'm in walking distance of campus.  If you can get yourself to DQ or Culvers you are already soo close to my house.  I'm the 3rd building down from Culvers as you go to Target (on the north side of the road).  It's 2 Mayfield Ave. apartment 4.  The building is white stone and a black roof.  Come in the middle door and walk up the stairs to num.4.

Best,
Krista

[Salt-l] ACTION ALERT 3/21/12--Painting Party at Housing Opportunities!

Hi SALTers!

Who: Anyone who wants a two hour study break on a beautiful Saturday morning!
What: Painting apartment doors for Housing Opportunities which provides shelter for homeless, or low-income families in Valparaiso
Where: Apartments behind Wendy's
When: Next Saturday (3/31/12) from 10am-12pm
Why: To save Housing Opportunities the expense of labor. Also, to enjoy a Saturday afternoon with SALTy individuals like yourself.

Food for thought: Many people have stepped up to make our big WRC project really take off and it's very exciting to see :) One thing to remember during these last hectic 7 weeks of school is that finding time to volunteer within our own community is still something that can be very enriching. Funding this well project in Kenya is an AWESOME learning experience for each of us that will help us to support those in need, come together as a group, and grow as individuals. Yet, there are people in our own neighborhood who can also benefit from your compassion and skills. If you have two free hours, keep this in mind! :)

Peace,
Kathleen

·      Devotional

·      "fix our eyes ahead" Everything ahead can seem daunting to us. 2 Corinthians 4:16- inwardly we are renewed day by day. We fix our eyes on what is unseen because it is eternal. Keeping it in perspective.

·                  Shared with us how communication works

·                              Sender: you, how you dress, body language

·                              Receiver: Person you are talking to

·                              Message: What you are saying

·                              Filter: How a person feels about the issue, personal understanding. Because of this the receiver only gets a                                                 portion of the message.

·                  Building trust can help to limit this filter

·                  Consistency with the message- say the same idea

·                  Think of a three-step ladder. 1) Facts and data 2) An angle of support- establish support of the data 3) The key message-                                     overriding message

[Salt-l] Recap of "Asking for Donations" Presentation

Hey all!

Just wanted to remind you of some highlights as we all head off for fun, relaxing, (fill in your perfect vacation adjective here) spring break adventures!

First, don't forget people won't donate unless we talk about the WRC and ask them to!  A great way to frame the question is, "Is this something you can contribute to?"

Second, make some personal goals of how many people to ask!  I will be asking 5 family members over the break, and more later. Will you do the same? Or more?

Third, people want to make a difference, which is great for us because not only are they helping Lugulu Hospital and the community around it, but they are investing in our education as we learn how to run a successful fundraising campaign as college students!

Fourth, you can never come short on thank yous, so say 'em, send 'em and mean 'em!!

Throughout the break post your successes on facebook, we want to hear from you! (Mary already is visiting 3 places at home, look out for her updates!)

Most importantly, the greatest gift is baptism!  Remember that as we as Christians seek to bring social justice in the world.

Have a marvelous break! and talk about the WRC as much as possible :)
Best,
Krista Schaefer

P.S.  Here is something to rehearse and check out the case statement for other great things to mention! The object of this project is to build a well at Lugulu Hospital for a reliable and consistent source of water that enables them to provide healthcare services to their fullest capacity as a rural health care institution.
