· We heard from Amber regarding the book How Much is Enough?

· We are not all called to be missionaries but we can all be Humanitarians. Having power and abusing power is an evil but having the power and not using the power is just as great of an evil. So we need to bring awareness to the different social justice issues at hand. Is advocacy enough? Advocating works to educate others so that the knowledge of the problem is a lasting reminder for constant effort to change.

· What makes our life significant?

· We do not need to blast our own greatness

· Instead, by serving others we can be great. Therefore, everyone can be great because everyone has the ability to serve. Leave a committed life behind instead of focusing on gaining material goods or shallow success.

· We met in out individual committees to further identify the plan for the WRC

[Salt-l] Creativity Meets Productivity: Join Us!

SALT'ers,

This week, Join us for our very exciting Pepper at 9:00 where we will hear from Jacob from Vision for Kenya (The organization which we are partnering with this year in the World Relief Campaign!) He is planning on sharing with us some "behind the scenes" info about himself, the organization he is a part of, and the well project which we are funding this year. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the creative brains behind the project which we get to be a part of! Make sure to invite others, we want to pack the house since Jacob is traveling from Chicago just to be with us for a short time! (http://www.facebook.com/events/265880730148754/)

Then, at 9:30, we will have our normal meeting, in which we will be devoting some time to the final planning of the "Freshmen Unite" project (as well as indulging in a surprise as well), and then moving into WRC business for the rest of the time. Our committees will be focusing on getting creative, and moving that creativity towards productivity! Remember, if you haven't joined us yet this semester, its never too late!

[Salt-l] Shaker articles!

Hi everyone!

We're preparing for the first issue of the 2012 Shaker! Submissions are due on Tuesday, February 14.

Tomorrow Jacob Sitati is coming to speak at Pepper, and Becca and I would love to have an article about his lecture for this issue of the Shaker! Please let us know if you want to write a brief 1/2 to one page single space review of the info session!

Other possible article topics include MLK Day events, Bible verses and devotional thoughts, SALT involvement in the Valparaiso community (or anything about the community!), WRC updates/reflections, and the environmental impact (or other social justice concern) about the new Zipcars! Also, if you feel called to write about any other topic, please do!

Hello fellow SALTers!

1-24-12 All group meeting

· Social Justice Snippet: social justice is "a quality and fairness between human beings, understanding and valuing human rights and recognizing the dignity of every human life. " Keep in mind the impact of what we are doing in the WRC.

· Rok talked to us as the Peace Corp recruiter about discovering yourself in order to find your path. Get out of your comfort zone in order to find yourself. Remember you can be happy everyday because each day is unique and an opportunity to make new positive change.

· Freshman were given time to plan a social. They proposed a lock-in in the chapel with popcorn and hot chocolate!!!!

· Then it was time to vote on our tchotcke for the WRC

· Our WRC is again, Kenya dig it? Supporting a $14,000 project to build a well at a hospital in Kenya.

· We voted and we chose the rope bracelets with the colors of the Kenyan flag.

· We may decide to get a second tchotcke that would be cheaper for things such as the 5K.

· Split into our four groups to begin working on the WRC: 1. Community Engagement, 2. Campus Awareness, 3. Campaign Legacy, 4. Campus Partnerships.

Announcements and Events

· MLK day with IIRON happened this last Sunday and was an example of the power of a group of people coming together for change.

· Davis family- Christmas gifts and sheets were delivered to them

· If anyone has any coats or anything to donate, we are going to do a second delivery. If you have items, e-mail alissa.kretzmann@valpo.edu or

· On MLK day SALT gave a presentation about the benefits of education in areas where they may not already have it. Tried to empower those attendees to use the education and talents that we have.

· We made a large donation to Housing Opportunities of Paper Goods. But they are always in need of more donations.

· Meal card donations happened as well last semester

· 1/25 Human Trafficking Event in Hobart (6:00ish leave for carpooling)

· 1/26 History of Linwood Ave in Valpo. CC Symposium. 6:30pm

· 1/26 at 12 is the first SALT social lunch. Meet by the tray return

Yo salters!
For those of you who don't know me, I'm a junior IECA/French major at
Valpo who has gone on the Harvey trip for the past two spring breaks,
once as a student and the second time as the quasi student leader.
While I can't participate this year (I'm in France!), I'm writing,
like Collin, to convince you guys that this truly is a once in a
lifetime experience, especially among those of you aren't from urban
backgrounds...
Given the funny and moving stories all of us who've participated can
attest to, it'd be a shame not to continue the relationship Valpo has
built with Restoration Ministries up to this point, but I'm assuming
you're a little hesitant because most of you don't really know what to
expect from a trip like this...
ALL THE MORE REASON TO GO...
Get out of your comfort zones a little. I can 100% guarantee that it
will be unlike any other service trip you've been on before (and while
the other two are great opportunities as well, they probably are at
least a little similar to the ones you've gone on in the past, right?)
This all might seem a little ambiguous, BUT I l have limited time and
space with which to make you guys see.
For those of who still need a little convincing, I've included a link
to pictures taken on last year's trip.
At least give it a little looksy...

[Salt-l] Finding your niche in the WRC...and in life!

Remember to join us this week for SALT as we "find our niche!" Our regular meeting will begin in Huegli Hall at 9:30pm where we will be describing further the World Relief Committees and choosing which committees we can find our niche in!

Also, we are excited that Rok, our Peace Corp representative will be joining us before the meeting for a Pepper, beginning at 8:45pm for those who are interested in hearing more about opportunities with the Peace Corp. Rok will also hopefully be joining us for our informal After-SALT Social at the Cafe following the meeting, so make sure to stick around for that!

Visiting Harvey, which I plan to go this year as well I gained a bigger perspective on desperation, and how God meets us where we are, no matter how dirty or filthy we feel. God is there for us all, we don't have to clean up to come to him, his love meets us where we are at. Harvey opened my eyes to people that are in situations that were in dark places both spiritually and physically and are reaching out to God for strength and love. I strongly encourage anyone to check out this trip, it is definitely worth while. Seriously

[Salt-l] A word of thanks for your participation in alleviating poverty this Christmas

Friends,

For those of you who were able to participate in this year's Adopt a Family project, I wanted to give you a word of thanks. Between all of the organizations and individuals who participated this year, we were able to provide Christmas gifts to 35 children in 11 different families. Although not all of us were able to see the faces of the grateful families, I hope that thinking about the following will help you understand the importance of your generosity this past holiday season.

Think about just how hard it would be to be facing the kind of poverty which prevents you from being able to purchase gifts for your children. The kind of poverty that has to humbly ask for help from college students. This is the kind of poverty that our adopted families are facing, right here in our community. Granted, we know full well that our limited Christmas gifts were not enough to remove our adopted families from the unfortunate situations they are facing, because the financial struggle upon impoverished people is deeply connected to systemic problems like unemployment, poor access to health and education and racism. Addressing these issues is a much harder, much longer process, but in light of MLK Day, I think that it is appropriate to be reminded that difficult dreams are still worth dreaming...and that they have to start somewhere.

We thank you again for alleviating the sting of poverty for our adopted families this year and encourage you to participate again next year. In the mean time, we hope you continue to join with SALT as we seek to be a part of sustainable, long lasting solutions and social justice for the world around us.

· There is a SALT bible study that is led by Andrew

· If interested in getting involved in this relaxed and enjoyable study or in leading a devotion at a SALT meeting contact: Andrew.Denecke@valpo.edu

· The WRC

· Raising awareness in our community and also educating ourselves while raising a substantial amount of funds for a specific cause chosen by the group.

· "Kenya Dig it? A WELL-ness project" is this year's WRC

· Building a well at a hospital in Kenya to help not only with healthcare but also with water needs in the community.

· We heard from Pastor Jim about his own personal connection to how the WRCs have impacted him.

· Emphasized the importance of networking and grass roots fundraising. Heard two examples of past SALT-ers and how what they learned through the WRC has helped them in their futures.

· We discussed the tchotcke and what we might want it to look like.

· Maybe a piece of linen (like TOMs shoes) that is decorated.

· Binder Clips

· Livestrong type bracelets

· Incorporate the flag or at least the colors

· Hot pink button?

· Rope bracelet with the three different colors of the flag

· Stickers?

· Krista will look into pricing

· Logo decision- we had 4 awesome designs to choose from. And we chose one! Yay!

[Salt-l] Make Social Justice a priority this semester!

SALT'ers,

Welcome back! I am excited to announce that tomorrow, Tuesday, is our first meeting of the semester! Make social justice a priority this semester and meet us in Huegli Hall at 9:30pm to hear lots of exciting updates about recent and upcoming projects as well as the low down on the World Relief Campaign! Remember, its never too late; we are excited to get to know you or to remember you, no matter how long it has been since you have sat with us on our heated floors!

Also, join us at 9:00 for a Pepper session where we will be discussing focus groups and evaluating the efficiency of how we have done focus groups in the past, as well as brainstorming how we could be more effective in the future. As an organization that seeks to be purposeful we need to continually be thinking about how we are doing things and how we can be doing things in an even better, more focused and sustainable way in the future.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday at 8:00 in the Ballrooms, there will be an informational session about SALT Spring Break Trips, talk to Kathleen Parilac if you would like to help us promote the trips, or just join us if you would like to know more about the trips yourself!

[Salt-l] Really SALT'y opportunity this Sunday in Chicago

Some of you are familiar with IIRON, who we have participated with in community organizing training and efforts in the past. But for those of you who don't know, IIRON is a regional organizing network working for social change in Indiana and Illinois. They are a really powerful voice in the social justice arena, and SALT likes to be a part of what they are doing when we can.

Their biggest event of the year is coming up this Sunday, in celebration of MLK Day. Regardless, of your interest in community organizing or the specific causes that IIRON supports, this event is going to be a great opportunity to be a part of something big and to hear from some pretty prominent speakers. Hey everyone,

I mentioned in my last email that some SALT'y things are going on in the coming week...Here are some opportunities to get involved....

MLK Focus Session Led by SALT: SALT will be leading a focus session at the MLK Day events but we need people to help lead the session! The session is on Monday, January 16th, from 1:15-2:15 and will be about the role that education plays in social justice and social change. If you are interested in helping to lead the session, please meet Wednesday (January 11th) in the lobby of the chapel at 7:45 to brainstorm ideas. It doesn't matter how long you have been in SALT or how much you feel like you know about the topic, we would love to have you help out!

Spring Break Info Session: SALT is getting the word out about Spring Break trips...If you would like to share about your experience on a Spring Break trip, we would love to have you talk and share pictures at the info session being held on Tuesday, January 17th at 8:00pm in Ballroom C. Email Kathleen Parilac if you are interested.

Campus Ministry Fair: Now that it is a new semester, it is time to remind campus that SALT exists! We need some SALT representatives to chat about SALT at the Campus Ministry Fair being held on Thursday, January 19th from 5:30-6:30pm in the Piano Lounge. It is pretty cool to think about the way that in the midst of our craziness, busyness and brokeness, God took the time to become flesh in the incarnate Christ, to be with us, to suffer with us and to offer us hope (and he still does that!) This Christmas, I encourage you to spend some time resting in the peace that the baby Jesus brings us!

[Salt-l] Shopping for our Adopt a Family!

SALT'ers,

Because of your generosity, we are going to be able to purchase some nice gifts for the Davis family! In fact, I was able to speak to the mother on the phone and she wanted me to relay to everyone their sincere gratitude, they are so excited that we can help them meet a need this holiday. That is what I wanted to emphasize in this email. As I talked with the mother, it became clear that their desires for gifts this holiday season are basic needs. In the Davis family, 2 of the children share a queen size bed, another set of 2 share a queen size bed, the baby sleeps in a toddler bed and 2 of the children sleep on the couch. They desperately need sheets and blankets, as well as pillows. The mother told me that "the kids didn't ask for a lot of toys this year because they know what they need." I asked for specific details on the kinds of things they were looking for, and I am excited to make these wishes realities! If you are interested in shopping with us, we will gather on Monday at 1:00 at the S-Couch in the Harre Union (if you have a car, and you want to drive, bring it along). Please respond to this email, to let me know that you are coming so that we don't leave you behind!

[Salt-l] Final Meeting of the Semester...with cookies!

Don't miss the final meeting of the semester! We will be gathering at 9:30 in Huegli Hall for some more World Relief Campaign brainstorming as well. We are also excited to spend some time in prayer and reflection as we celebrate the work of our focus groups and entrust God with our unfinished work. Lastly, we will send off our graduating seniors and our study abroad'ers! After all of that there will be cookies!

Exciting things happened tonight! Read below:

All group meeting 11-29-11

· We heard from Kristin Lewis from Trinity and part of the coalition for the women's shelter called Open Arms.

· Women arrive between 6 and 9, they receive a meal, a safe place to stay, and breakfast in the morning

· Volunteers are needed for these: 6-10pm, 10-2a., 2-7am

· There is a training on 12/4 from 12-1pm

· Contact Kristin Lewis at deac.kristin@yahoo.com or Peggy Ridenour at mrspride@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering and are able.

· Kathleen Parilac, this years service coordinator, spoke about donating some of our funds to Housing Opportunities to purchase needed paper goods and laundry detergent

· Focus Groups

· We broke into groups again to discuss whether we have a need for further projects in the groups, whether a group wants to do a VUTV spot, other outreach and education opportunities.

· WRC brainstorming

· Names: "get well soon" "Kisima for Kenya" "Well, let's get started" "Kenya dig it?"

· Well for wellness; "A well-ness project"; Visima for Kenya; Bringing water and wellness to the surface.

They have many large orders coming in for the holidays and need help packaging and doing other small jobs. She is also looking for part time workers and will pay $7.50 an hour. Make sure to join us tomorrow for a Pepper at 9:00pm in Huegli Hall with a representative from Open Arms Women's Shelter. The shelter has recently opened in Valparaiso and is seeking to get the word out and to get volunteers to get involved! Following the Pepper, we will spend some time continuing our work in focus groups, followed by a brainstorming session for the World Relief Campaign name (Be thinking...)!

Finally, try to bring a few dollars for our annual Adopt a Family project. We will all be pitching in to buy some Christmas presents for 1 or 2 local families who cannot afford gifts this season.

Join us Tuesday, at 9:30 in Huegli Hall for the BIG vote! This week, we are committing our time to hearing from our top 4 World Relief Campaign candidates! We will be skyping with 3 of them and hearing from 1 of them in person. At the end of the meeting we will be making our final decision! If you are a verbal processor, and anticipate needing to talk through this decision, come early to the meeting to chat with others informally about the WRC candidates.

And, don't forget...after the meeting we will celebrate by gathering at Buffalo Wild Wings for our after-SALT social!

Today (Monday) November 14th there will be a Suicide Prevention event in the Community Room of the Christopher Center from 7-8PM.

Topics to be covered: the identification and prevention of suicidal behavior for both self and others, social attitudes that are obstacles to suicide prevention, and things that can be done for the individual.

I urge you all to try and make it!

We are still looking for some volunteers to work at the concession stand this Saturday. By volunteering to help, we raise money, for our fall budget (which we are using to reimburse focus group costs and donating the rest to a local organization). I'd like to be able to get enough volunteers to split up the game into two shifts, 12:00-2:00 and 2:00-4:00. Let me know if you are available for either of these time slots!

· Recap from Focus groups

· Fair trade- PSJS they had an activity related to unfair labor laws

· They will be having a showing of black gold on 12/1

· SPEAC- 11/14- 7pm in the Community Room discussing Suicide Prevention

· Love Food Hate Waste- Project highlighting how much food is wasted each day. Thursday between 10 and 1pm they collected 173 lbs of waste from the union. Will be holding an event with the University Chef.

· Human Trafficking- Are looking into possibly getting someone to speak.

· Mexican Immigrants- At the PSJS they had the group take a portion of the required civics exam and had a pastor from Gloria Dei come in and talk to the group. Potentially doing a drive for supplies related to the tutoring program.

· World Relief Campaign Descriptions and Voting

· First we heard a description of each of the 12 proposals and then voted down to 4.

· These include: Dining for Women, Vision for Kenya, Mission Guatemala, Heal Africa

· We will hear from the project leaders via skype next week so we can narrow down the project to 1.

Great work at the PSJS! Join us Tuesday at 9:30 in Huegli to spend some time continuing the great work of our focus groups, and then, get excited to hear about the World Relief Campaign Proposals. This is a super important and exciting meeting to attend because we are going to be voting on the top 4 WRC proposals which we will narrow down to the final selection next week!

If you haven't been to SALT in a while, don't fret! We need your help to finish out focus groups and your input as we start to make a lot of decisions about the WRC!

· We have received 12 applications so far

· We will raise $14,000 next semester for the project that we choose

· In the coming weeks we will narrow our project from 12 to 4 to 1

· Women World Wide- launch a training program in Cambodia regarding victims and women at-risk for human trafficking

· Dining for Women- US organization that chooses an organization to support by dining in. Kenyan Girls stepping out of poverty would be t he project that we would help this group support

· Friends elementary school in Tanzania

· Grace and Healing Ministry- housing and community center for HIV families in Tanzania

· Gerlandia Orphanage and Education Center

· Heal Africa- Dominican Republic of Congo Empowering Women in Poverty who experience gender violence

· Lutheran Immigration refugee and service- improving legal assistance for detainees

· Mission Guatemala- providing dental health care and establishing a mobile clinic

· Range of Motion- improving lives of amputees by doing an addition of the hospital and mobile lab for the prostheses in Guatemala

· Rebuilding Together- Need for Handi cap ramps

· Shine on Sierra Leone- School in most marginalized community. Looking for computer labs to help establish microloans

· Vision for Kenya- Health and water related.

· We Mostly focused on our focus groups and the peace and social justice symposium

Prof. Schaefer, chair of the international service department, is joining us to chat about the soon approaching WRC. Just a reminder that the Homelessness Awareness Sleep-Out is tonight on the Huegli lawn (looks like the weather will be okay)! Come from 6-8 to create a shelter, or just join as at 8:00pm when the program will get started with a speaker and a short prayer service. After that games, singing and shelter-seeking will commence! Make sure to remember warm things and sleeping bags, as well as an item to donate to Housing Opportunities!

Anyone want to dress up and go to a Halloween dance?
Opportunity Enterprises is hosting an event for their consumers next Friday (Oct. 28th) from 6:30 -8:30pm.
It is being held at Immanuel Lutheran church which is about 3 minutes away by car.

Here's what you would do:
Dance & interact with attendees, eat snacks, clean up (until 9pm). Woo! It's a fun time had by all.
OE is a non-profit organization that creates sustainable life choices and opportunities for individuals with unique challenges and abilities.
They employ nearly 400 people and serve over 1,000 children and adults with disabilities throughout Northwest Indiana each yearhttp://www.oppent.org/

10-4-11 All group meeting Minutes

Tonight, we learned more about how to "focus" our focus groups. We were encouraged to look into the root causes and solutions of our individual problems that are prevalent in the nature of our focus group.

· Announcements

· Build ONE America: Organize on a grassroots level to organize people in major urban areas. Looking into gathering leaders in Northwest Indiana to identity regional goals. Meeting on October 24, 2011 and perhaps SALT would put its name to it.

· Earthtones project on 10-22-11. Two projects: first, a scavenger hunt picking up trash and tokens. Second, remove invasive species off campus. After projects, there will be a movie and environmentally friendly dinner

Below is a message from Adam Brainard, a member of an environmental action group on campus called Earthtones. He asked if SALT would be interested in taking part in their fall service project.

It will take place on October 22nd. The service portion is from 12:00 until 3:30. Afterwards is a free, organic dinner and documentary showing about the Great Lakes.

Thank you for your interest in helping Earthtones with our Fall Service Project. Below is a running itinerary of the event, with all listed activities. Please note that we anticipate some volunteers to go to the bog project, but this will be on a voluntary basis. The VU part of the project will be set up as a competition among small groups to find and collect the most litter and scavenger coins. VU campus maps will be provided.

12pm: All volunteers meet at Harre Union (location TBA).

12:15: About twenty people carpool and leave for Cowles Bog.

12:15: Remaining volunteers partner up and participate in campus cleanup and scavenger hunt competing with other teams to collect the most litter (especially cigarette butts) and hidden scavenger trinkets.

12:35 Cowles Bog volunteers arrive and begin work with National Park Service.

3:30pm: Scavenger competition ends; VU volunteers reunite at designated location. Competition results given and winners announced.

3:45pm: Documentary Waterlife is shown (free of charge) to interested volunteers.

5:00pm: NPS volunteers finish and leave for VU.

5:15: Movie ends, NPS volunteers join VU volunteers, organic supper is provided.

5:45: Organic Supper finishes, VU volunteers dismissed, Movie is offered to NPS volunteers.

7:30: Second showing of movie ends, remaining NPS volunteers dismissed.

Please let me know as soon as convenient if SALT can provide any support for our project. We would love to see as many environmentally minded people participate as possible. Of course, if members have limited availability, they do not have to stay for the entire event, or even show up to the main service project. If they just want to see the movie that is fine! That said, we would like to reserve the dinner to our faithful service project volunteers...

SALT Minutes 9-27-11 all group meeting

· Pastor Jim discussed the importance of discovering "why" we are in SALT

· Identify your self-interest to better understand your purpose and passions

· We split up into passion's groups this week

· Just a reminder: our 5 focus groups are mental health awareness and suicide prevention, food security, fair trade coffee, human trafficking, Mexican immigrants

· If you were unable to attend the meeting, you can still join whatever focus group you are interested in!

· There are many positions within the focus groups available: including group leaders, VUTV liaison, researcher etc etc

· 10/25- WRC applications are due. If you have any ideas, let Krista Schaeffer know

· Last weekend's Rave PARTY raised over $300

· 10/1 selling Indian crafts at Bazaar.

[Salt-l] Needed: Volunteers to sell crafts

Holly and Michelle Singh have once again volunteered their Indian handicrafts for SALT to sell to make a little profit. They are having a international food bizarre this Saturday for homecoming and thought it might be a nice time to sell some crafts. If we don't sell them, someone else will...but if we can get some volunteers we can earn some money. (I was thinking it could even make sense to use the money we earn to invest in our fair trade fair...)

The event is October 1st, with set-up starting at 10:15 and going until 1:00pm.

· Craig Jariz led us in devotion on insurmountable challenges in relation to choosing passions. Through God, we can accomplish great things.

· At SALT staff yesterday, the list was narrowed to 26 items.

· We advocated and voted tonight on our Focus Groups for the next semester!

· Our 5 focus groups this semester are: Mexican immigrants, Fair Trade Coffee, Human Trafficking, Mental Health/suicide prevention, and Food Security

Come next week to begin splitting up into these groups and begin to discuss and formulate plans to enact change and educate the Valpo campus!

Events Coming Up!

This Thursday 5-7pm is a campus ministry fair in the hearth room of the union. SALT will be represented. Come to hear more about ministry happenings and availability on campus!

This Saturday from 9-11pm is the rave for rations with Lambda Chi in the Harre Union Ballroom C. If you want to volunteer to help set-up come at 8:30pm. This will be a really fun event where we can have a good time while also raising funds for a good cause!

Crop Walk is 10-9-11- Just mark your calendars and more information will be coming!

Just a reminder that our Focus Group advocacy and voting is tomorrow night! If you haven't made it out yet, its not too late...in fact its a great time to join us!

We'll begin with a coffee half-hour at 9:00 in the Lounge of Huegli Hall to mingle and chat about our passions over coffee and desserts! At 9:30 we will hear from passionate SALTers who want to advocate for a focus group. From there, we will take a vote, and...voila, our focus groups will be formed! After the meeting, we'll be celebrating the formation of our focus groups at Pat's Parlor...Next week we will break into the newly formed focus groups and begin putting ACTION to our passions!

· Andrew led us in a devotion regarding community and our ability to share our passion and love with those around us.

· Sara Tucker introduced us to the idea of one-on-ones

· One-on-ones are intentional conversations that are designed to uncover passions and create a relationship.

· 1. Set a meeting time. 2. Exchange phone numbers. 3. Set the date in your calendar or phone. 4. Be on time. 5. Have a great conversation (can be 15 minutes or 2 hours! ;))

· We then went into our Passion's List (see the attached list)

· Come next week with an idea in mind for a potential focus group

· Shaker is looking for submissions for the first edition: due on Sept. 27^th

· Write articles about social justice issues related to your summer or perhaps a passion

Just a reminder that the 3rd SALT meeting of the year is upon us! If you haven't made it out yet, this is a wonderful week to join us!

We will begin the evening with our "Pepper" forum at 9:00 in the Lumina Room of Huegli Hall, where we will be discussing and thinking about what the theology is behind social justice. Mainly, the question we want to ponder is...why are Christians called to social justice, and why is it so important? Then, bring your passions, because at 9:30 we will be forming our Passions List! Next week, these passions will help us form our focus groups where we will take ACTION upon our passions!

I wanted to send out a final invite reminding people about the King-Chavez Social Justice Event, which in Pastor Jim's words includes, "Food and a Social Justice Rockstar!" The party starts at 6:00pm this Friday and includes dinner and Keynote Speaker, Father Michael Louis Pfleger. The event is sponsored by the Northwest Indiana Federation and is a huge gathering of community organizers and social justice advocates like us! If we can get a group of people together, we will car-pool and the chapel will also help us pay for a portion of the ticket price!!!

The VIA has been published!!!!! Check it out… anywhere! Ithas been distributed to all of the major Buildings so pick up a copy. Laurie Kenyon and Mackenzie FLahartydid a great jOb putting this together for us!

Don't forget about the semi-formalthis Friday from 8-10 in the Mueller RefeCtory. The theme is the Royal Wedding andprizes will go to the best costumes to that theme. There is a $5 suggested donation for the WRC.

A meeting on a blustery day

ITS EARTH WEEK! There are events going on all around campus,they sound
great so get involved.

In case you haven't yet heard, we have so far accumulatedmore than 7,300
service hours… and we keep adding on more! This just shows how much
SALT canaccomplish when we set our minds to it.

Its meal card donation time again! This will start nextMonday and go to
the end of the semester. REMEMBER! You cant carry over ANY money into
next semester so if youaren't going to use your money Hilltop would
really appreciate yourdonations. Also, if you would liketo help out
with delivering the food, Friday May, 13th, we will begetting together
to bring the donations to Hilltop House.

The bake sale will be going on all this week so stop by theUnion to buy
a sweet treat.

Kuts for kuJenga – April 24th. 4:00 pm outside the UnionCafé. Stop by

The WRC 5K is THIS WEEKEND!!!!!! Make sure to register for$15 before
this Saturday, April 9th for the KuJenga Jog. If you register the day
of the cost is$20. Make sure to come out andbring your friends!

Make sure to spread the word about the Heckler vs. SchwehnSumo
Wrestling. Its this Fridayduring lunch break outside of the Union Café.
But it wont happen unless we raise $1000 this week, so keepselling
tickets to wrestle Heckler or Schwehn. ALSO, if you feel like you want
to donate but don't wantto wrestle one of the two, you can also get your
chance after the event. It will be $3 to put on the suit andwrestle so
here's your chance!

Dr. Brugh came to the meeting this week to talk about animportant new
opportunity on campus:
Americorps is a network of local, state and national serviceprograms
that engages more than 75,000 Americans each year in service to meetour
nation's most critical needs. Become a part of the Americorps and
Indiana Campus Contact (ICC) nationalservice network by joining the
Interfaith Service Corps. Members are eligible to receive astipend
(although only one or two are awarded) and will put in 300 hours
ofservice throughout the year. Ifyou are at all interested in becoming
a part of Valparaiso University'sInterfaith Service Corps. Or have

SALT Meeting Minutes

Hey SALTers!

I'm filling in for Annie with the minutes this week! There are a bunch
of dates to put into your calendar, so read on!

SALT Babysitting- This Friday, April 1st in Huegli Lumina Room (where
we have our meetings). If you would like to volunteer, come at 4:30 and
stay as long as you are able. Bring crafts, games, movies, stuff to
play outside with, or anything else that we could use to entertain the
kids! Dinner will be served for you and for the kids. It will be a
bunch of fun!
· Next week, April 3th-8th is our $1,000 week! We will have a
table set up in the Union for the Heckler vs. Schwehn wrestling match,
which will be held on the 8th at 11:30am. Raffle tickets will be sold
at the table for student to get their own chance to wrestle either
President Heckler or Provost Schwehn. Tell your friends and donate as
much as you can so we can reach our goal of $1,000 next week! We would
also love some volunteers to man the table, contact Amy.Lukas@valpo.edu
if you are interested in helping out.
The 5K, kuJenga Jog, will be on April 9th at the Chapel. It is $15 to
pre-register and $20 the day of. Register today to guarantee yourself
an awesome t-shirt!
On April 15th, Sig Ep is hosting a dance party and donating all of the
money they raise to the WRC. Check it out!
On April 17th at 1pm at the intramural soccer field (by Maria Elaina's),
there is going to be a kickball tournament benefiting the WRC. You can
register until the 16th. The fee is $20 per team of up to 10 people.
That's only $2 per person!
Noodles & Company is having a Giving Back night to benefit the WRC.
More details to come!
Mark your calendars for the SALT Semi-Formal! It will be on April 29th,
and it is sure to be great fun! More details to come!
RC e-mails- Like the individual letters we sent out earlier, there is
now an e-mail that you can send to all of your friends and family. The
letters include a link to the website where your friends and family can
donate online. Laurie will be sending them out soon, so watch your
Inbox!
· If you are attending the IIRON meeting this weekend, we will
be leaving the s-couch at 9am and won't return until 8pm. Bring money
for food and your train ticket to Chicago. Let Mary or Alissa know if
you are interested in going or if you have a car to drive to the train
station!
· Why we want to give? Our current total is $7,400! That means
we need to raise $5,100 more! That totals out to $850 per week rest of
school year. If every person at the meeting tonight donated $127.50 we
could finish the WRC right now! We, as SALT members, need to give our
own money too! It's important to invest in it ourselves since we chose
it out of the 39 applications! It also makes it easier to ask for money
if you give your own! Feel proud of this awesome project. Congrats! We
are over halfway there! :)
· The Shaker needs articles ½ page to full page, single space.

· PEACE rally, Sunday 2-3:30pm between union and VUCA. There

Hello. Hello again

I am going to start with important dates to remember. Get your
calendars ready, here goes..

kuJenga Jog – April 9th Spread the word and get your friends to
register. Its $15 dollars beforehand or $20 theday of to register. It
should be alot of fun, so talk it up!

Sumo Wrestling – April 8th President Heckler and ProvostSchwehn have
agreed to sumo wrestle two raffle winners and each other!! We will be
selling tickets starting theweek of the 4th . Noneof this can happen
though if we don't raise $1000 that week.

Japan @ the VIC – Friday March 23rd at7:00pm. The director of
DiscoverJapan in Valparaiso will be talking about the impact of the
earthquake andleading a demonstration about how to make paper cranes.
The VIC will also be taking donationsto help victims of the earthquake
and tsunami.

Business Blitz- This Saturday, March 26th. We will be going to local
businessesand spreading the word about the WRC. We would really
appreciate it if a lot of people could be there(especially if you have a

drive. Otherwise, just show up at the S couch in the union at 10am

Lutheran Basketball Tournament- Starts this Thursday. There will be a
service to start it alloff and it would be great to have people standing
at the WRC table in thechapel at the beginning and the end of the

Women's homeless shelter- all the time! Thereis a new women's homeless
shelter in Valparaiso and they are in need ofvolunteers to stay up
between 2 and 7am. So if you have a big project and know you need to

WRC happenings

We are really moving along with this WRC campaign, we have made over $5000 to date. Great job guys!

Here are some important dates to be aware of...

1.) Taste of Tanzania is this Friday at 6:00. Tell all your friends and buy your tickets in the dining services office. We really want a big turnout for this so lets make it happen! We also need people to help pass out fliers in the union tonight and tomorrow at dinner from 5:30 to 6:30, and again on Friday at chapel break. It would be great if a lot of people could show up to spread the word so if you have time, stop by and pass out some fliers!

2.) Records committee is getting together this Sunday at 12:30 in the chapel to make more Jenga blocks. Stop by if you want to help out.

3.) There is an opportunity for SALT to be involved as part of a student division for a group called IIRON that advocates for certain issues around the area. We would be joining with other schools. If you are interested in this, mark your calendars for April 2nd from 2:00 to 5:00. We might be speaking about the issue of immigration at this meeting, if you want to learn more about that issue come to the community room of the library on Thursday at 3:30 where there will be an immigration forum. There will be El Saltos food served!

4.) April 9th is our 5k run called kuJenga Jog. On April 8th, President Heckler and provost Schwehn will be competing in a sumo competition!...... only if we raise $1000 the week of April 8th. So be thinking of ideas to raise money for that event!

VIA submissions are in and editors Mackenzie Flaharty and Laurie Kenyon would love your help. They are looking for some initial feedback on writings and photos before they begin work on the magazine. A meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday at 7 in the community room of the Library. If possible please look over the written submissions beforehand (see attachments). Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Spring Fever!

Its finally almost spring break!! Just 3 more days! If you have not yet signed up for a spring break trip and would like to tomorrow is the LAST DAY to join the Harvey, IL trip. Visit the Chapel office to sign up.

For those of you who are already signed up for a trip or are going on any other spring break adventure (band, Costa Rica, etc.) there will be a send off at Friday morning prayer in the chapel.

The World Relief Campaign is moving along great. We are already up to around $5,000 which is a lot further than we were last year at this time. Thanks to everyone who helped with the basketball game and the Indian goods sales!

Since we are already at such a high amount, Records Committee is going to be making more Jenga pieces for our Gimmick in the Chapel. if you want to help out they are going to be meeting on Thursday at 5:00 in the Chapel.

~ BAKE SALE ( Wed & Thurs this week ) From 11:00-noon and 5:30-6:30, Salt will be selling baked goods in the Chapel View Lounge of the Harre Union. Make sure to remember to bring some spare change when you walk through, you will be thankful you did once you see the tasty treats!

~ TASTE OF TANZANIA ( Friday, March 18th ) Come enjoy a delicious buffet of great authentic Tanzanian foods while learning more about the WRC. Speakers will be Professors Schaeffer and Monson, and Engineers without Boarders. CORE APPROVED! Get your tickets from dining services for $10 before the event or $13 pay at the door. WRC Basketball game! Be there!!

*Weare making HUGE leaps and bounds with the WRC thus far.
We have raised over 2000 dollars so farand are really getting the word
out. Keep telling people about our kuJenga, give brochures to your
friends,family, professors, etc… there are still more people to tell!

*There is a basketball gameSaturday at the ARC and $3.50 will be given
to the WRC for every student who isthere so tell your friends, tell your
sisters, and tell your brothers causethey're donating for errbody up in
here. Its going to be a great chance to get the word out about kuJenga
on amuch larger scale.

*Wedand Thurs next week, the 23rd and the 24th there will
bea bake sale for the World Relief Campaign. Contact

selling food during chapel break andat dinner.

*The educational dinner the "Tasteof Tanzania" is coming soon on March
18th!!! There will be great Tanzanian foodand tons of good information

sold over 700 dollars in goods and half of that goes to the WRC! Look

Hey again,

Ill start off as always with important dates, be sure to mark these on your calendars!

~ The World Banquet is this weekend, you can get your tickets at the front desk in the Union. Aside from there being amazing food, SALT is going to be selling Indian Craft goods both before and immediately after the event. The booth will be set up from 2-5 and half of the sales go to the WRC!

1.) SALT heard from a guest Peace Corps Rep. last night at our meeting. He will be in the Alumni Room today (Feb. 9th) from 5-6 and at the career fair speaking about his experience and answering more questions.

2.) Next Monday, Feb. 14th there will be an Interfaith through services training event, it will be from 4:00-5:00 in the Hearth Room of the union.

3.) Love the environment?? We are looking for a SALT representative for the Environmental Task Force on campus. If you have a special interest in the environment and want to get involved, contact any staffer or Pastor Jim.

4.) There is still room on the Harvey spring break trip!!!! I went on it last year and can say from experience that it is an absolutely AMAZING experience! Contact Jenni.Sechrist@valpo.edu asap if you are interested at all.

5.) We are in need of more painted chochkes (I have absolutely no idea how to spell that) each week before the meeting at 9:00, supplies will be set out so that those who have some time can pitch in.

6.) Mark your calendars for the Feb. 19th bracket buster basketball game. Homer Drew has committed to making a donation to the WRC based on the number of students who attend up to $250!

Salt is really moving along with our WRC, we have made $1291 so far! That is over 10% of our goal!

Also, a big thanks to everyone who helped out with the kickoff coffeehouse this weekend. Salt made over 400 dollars and it was a HUGE success! Great job!!

Getting down to business

Hello, hello everyone! and welcome to those of you who are new to the listserv :)

For this week's minutes I am going to start with important dates because there are a lot to take note of.

1. ) If you have any sort of clothing item that you can donate to Krista.Schaefer@valpo.edu for her trip to Ethiopia, you can either send her a message and give them to her, or there will be Valparaizone shirts being traded in the Chapel view lounge during chapel break all this week. Just bring in an old shirt and get a new one, at no cost to you while helping someone in need! Krista leaves on Feb. 2nd so make sure to get those in.

2.) Time is running out to sign up for spring break trips!!!! there are still plenty of spots left on the Harvey Trip but only two left for New Orleans!! Sign up and get your money in fast! it's $100 for Harvey and $150 for New Orleans. If you need anymore information on the trips you can email Jenni.Sechrist@valpo.edu. You can also sign up and take your money to the chapel office.

3.) Pastor Jim mentioned the other night about a couple other spring break trip options. There is a week long trip to Cedar Lake indiana where you can learn about community organizing and why our one on ones are so helpful! There is room and board and if you are interested the cost is only $100 dollars.
- there is also a week long trip to Haiti that was mentioned. Everything is paid for except the plain ticket if you are interested. Contact Pastor Jim at James.Wetzstein@valpo.edu if you are interested or have any more questions.

4.) Do you enjoy writing? ? The Salt Shaker is in need to contributers for their next edition. Submissions need only be 3/4 to a page long. If you are interested contact Laura.Ehlen@valpo.edu

5.) This SUNDAY, FEB 30th! Records will be in the Chapel starting at noon and will most likely be there until around 8. If yu have any time to devote to making the gimmick or the chockees that would be great!!!! just stop by anytime during those hours and we will probably be around.

6.) On Feb. 8th which is not the next meeting but the one after that, there will be a Peace Corps. member coming to talk to us. If you are interested in talking with him personally make sure to get there at 9 before the meeting starts.
-- Engeneers without borders will also be coming to our next meeting to talk a little about Tanzania so dont miss out!!!

There are some important dates and info that you all should be aware of.

- Krista Schaefer is going to be going to Ethiopia in February. If anyone has clothing or childrens books that they want to donate, contact Krista.Schaefer@valpo.edu or bring them to the next Salt meeting. If we all just bring one thing, we could donate a lot. She is taking donations until Feb. 2nd.

- There is still time to sign up for spring break trips, the deadline is January 24th. If you have any questions or would like to sign up email Jennifer.Sechrist@valpo.edu

- Emily fitch has an opportunity to serve his weekend with Operation Neighbors, she will be sending out more info later in the week so be on the lookout for that.

- Have a knack for writing? Our editor of the Salt Shaker Laura Ehlen is looking for people to submit to the next Shaker. Contact Laura.Ehlen@valpo.edu to get involved.

- The records team will be working on the gimmick to go in the chapel on Sunday, January 30th. It will be a big Jenga game. They are welcoming anyone who wants to help.

And we have one VERY important date to mark down. Friday, Feb. 4th will be our kick off weekend for the WRC.
There will be an awesome coffee house so make sure to get all your friends to come out.

Ku Jenga!!!

Now time to get started with the WRC campaign!!! and the new name is ......

KU JENGA!!!! Ku Jenga is a Swahili word for to build or to create. I'm sure you are all familiar with the game Jenga, the name for that game actually came from this word. Only we are building a school, not tearing it down. Lets not get that confused.
We also need to find a tag line to go along with this so that people can associate the name with what we are doing in Tanzania.

Some possible names we have so far are...
Building up little minds, reaching new heights, creating classes for kids, teaching tots in Tanzania, teaching tomorrow's minds, building schools building minds, creating classes = building Tanzania's future. If you have anymore suggestions contact Amy.Lukas@valpo.edu

ALSO, there is an important date coming up. This Sunday, January 15th we will be hosting an MLK focus session in Mueller hall Rm. 140 from 1:15 to 3:30. If you are interested in helping out or want more information contact Krista.Schaefer@valpo.edu

Tonight we just got started splitting up into committees and getting down to work. If you joined a committee tonight and you want to change that is just fine, you are not bound to the committee you started at tonight. The groups are, prospect ID, activities, research, and records.

We are also in need of a cool gimmick. A gimmick is something that is usually in the chapel and is a big representation of our campaign and who has funded. Last year for Casas for Kids we built a small house and covered bricks around it symbolizing how much money was being raised. Here are the ideas for this year.
